CG Spectrum launch industry-built Game Programming course course
02/08/2016
Melbourne, Australia—CG Spectrum have announced the launch of their fully accredited Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media specialising in Games Programming, with the first cohort beginning 5th September, 2016.
The course curriculum has been built from the ground up by Matt Rowland from Melbourne's League of Geeks, creators of Armello and Tony Coculuzzi, lead programmer at Studio MDHR, creators of Cuphead.
The Game Programming course is an advanced diploma designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of programming, with Unity as a base. Students learn online with CG Spectrum’s industry-tested methodology, including close guidance from mentors and live feedback sessions where instructors work on student submissions. This approach will progress students to a level where they can build modifications in pre-existing game engines, and graduate with all the skills needed to code their very own game and seek industry employment.
CG Spectrum have worked closely with the games industry to ensure the course best fits their employment needs of the games industry first. League of Geeks Co-founder and Director, Blake Mizzi, commented:
"Throughout Armello's development we've found hiring programmers to be especially challenging. The necessary intersection of skill, autonomy and taste required of good programmers is hard to come by even in a development hub like Melbourne, so we're looking forward to seeing that pool not only increase, but diversify."
The new Department Head of the Game Programming course will be indie game developer Michelle Osborne. A prolific creator in the industry, Osborne has released several successful games including Louder Than Thunder, Tankya's Adventure - The Curse of Zoltar and Grimwood.
Co-founder Jeff Pepper commented:
"We started CG Spectrum because Nick and I worked in the industry and when it came to hiring, we just couldn't find graduates who could do what we needed. All our courses have been designed in close consultation with industry, and Games Programming is no exception. This course was written by and for the Australian game industry. The demand for skilled, job-ready programmers is there, and CG Spectrum is uniquely positioned to meet it."
Department Head Michelle Osborne added;
“Working with CG Spectrum to build this course is refreshing, as we all have the same primary concern - the student experience. Everyone is a current and practicing industry pro, and together we’ve made something really exciting by focusing on what skills are needed to immediately start making and releasing games.”
To celebrate the launch of the course, CG Spectrum has invited the industry, potential students and Australian games media to attend their launch event on Thursday 25th August 2016.
An industry panel titled, “Getting into games: a primer on programming” will be led by the course designers from 6:30pm and will be followed by networking for potential students and industry professionals. Guests can register their interest here.
