Dive Brief:
- Goucher College is declaring its admissions-via-video project to be a success, with 64 video applications, from students in 20 states, in just a few months for nearly 30 majors.
- The Baltimore college started accepting two-minute videos produced by applicants about themselves — along with a short application form and two works of scholarship — in September as an alternative path to admission.
- With help from the video applicants, Goucher had more early action applications than ever by Dec. 1, eCampus News reported.
Dive Insight:
As with other higher education institutions that are making SAT scores optional for applicants, part of Goucher’s reasoning behind the video admissions is to avoid socioeconomic inequalities in standardized admissions testing. Also, college admissions officials believe that students of the smartphone generation may be more comfortable with making videos about themselves than with a traditional application. Video applications were submitted by students interested in arts and humanities, communications, biology, pred-med, business management, and international studies.
