Dive Insight:
Coursera launched in 2012 and has since grown to offer courses from more than 100 universities around the world. It has reached more than 16 million students. Coursera partners with institutions to give them an online platform for their courses, opening them to students anywhere. For many institutions, this has turned into a marketing opportunity, as the massive open online courses expand visibility of the college or university, making students think about full degree programs where they may not have before.
An Inside Higher Ed analysis recently found that all of the first institutions to partner with Coursera have also partnered with non-profit edX, though the early edX adopters have not all made the same move in the other direction.
